Free Time Duration Calculator | Hours & Minutes

Stop struggling with complicated time math. Instantly calculate the exact duration between any two points in time. Our Free Time Duration Calculator handles overnight shifts, automatically deducts break times, and calculates your total payroll earnings in a single click.

Calculating the exact number of hours and minutes you worked seems like it should be simple, but it rarely is. Because time operates on a Base-60 mathematical system (60 minutes in an hour) rather than our standard Base-10 decimal system, manual calculations frequently lead to payroll errors. Did you start at 8:45 AM, take a 30-minute lunch, and clock out at 4:20 PM? Trying to figure out your exact decimal hours for billing can be a massive headache. Our Timesheet & Duration Engine does the heavy lifting for you. Simply input your start and end times, and the dashboard will instantly generate your total duration, convert it into decimal format for invoicing, and calculate your total gross pay based on your hourly rate.

How to Use the Timesheet Dashboard

Our dashboard eliminates the need to rely on complex Excel formulas or mental math. Here is how to automate your payroll tracking:

  1. Clock In & Out: Use the time selectors to input your exact start and end times. The tool automatically detects your browser's local format (12-hour AM/PM or 24-hour military time).
  2. Deduct Breaks: Enter the total number of unpaid minutes you spent on lunch or break (e.g., type "30" for a half-hour lunch). The engine will automatically subtract this from your total.
  3. Set Your Rate: Input your hourly billing rate.
  4. Export Your Data: The dashboard instantly provides your strict hours/minutes, your decimal equivalent for logging, and the exact dollar amount to put on your invoice.

Crucial: Standard Time vs. Decimal Time

The single biggest mistake employees and freelancers make when filling out timesheets is confusing Standard Time with Decimal Time.

Time does not operate on a 100-point scale; it operates on a Base-60 scale. This means that working for "Seven and a half hours" is 7 Hours and 30 Minutes. However, if you write 7.30 on your timesheet, your HR department's payroll software will read that as "Seven point three hours."

To convert minutes into a decimal so you can multiply it by a dollar amount, you must divide the minutes by 60.

  • 15 Minutes = 0.25 Hours
  • 30 Minutes = 0.50 Hours
  • 45 Minutes = 0.75 Hours

If your hourly rate is $20, and you worked 7h 30m, the math is 7.50 × $20 = $150. Our calculator automatically handles this conversion to ensure you never under-bill your clients.

How We Calculate Overnight Shifts

A major flaw in basic time calculators is that they break if an employee works the "Graveyard Shift" (crossing over midnight).

If you clock in at 10:00 PM and clock out at 6:00 AM, a basic calculator will try to subtract 10 from 6, resulting in a negative number or a mathematical error. Our Timesheet Engine utilizes intelligent chronometric logic. If the "End Time" is numerically smaller than the "Start Time," the engine assumes the shift rolled over into the next calendar day. It automatically adds 24 hours to the calculation, accurately verifying that a 10 PM to 6 AM shift is exactly 8 hours long.

Why Freelancers Need Break Deductions

When tracking billable hours for a client, accuracy and transparency are paramount. Most corporate contracts and labor laws dictate that lunch breaks are "unpaid time."

If you are at the office from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, that is a span of 8 hours. However, if you took a 45-minute lunch break, your actual billable time is 7 hours and 15 minutes (7.25 decimal hours). By utilizing the "Deduct Break" field in our calculator, you can track your gross span while ensuring your net invoiced hours are perfectly compliant with your contract.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I calculate durations longer than 24 hours?

This specific utility is optimized for calculating single-day work shifts or overnight shifts (up to a maximum of 24 hours). If you need to calculate durations spanning multiple days or weeks, you should use our dedicated Date Calculator.

Is my payroll data saved?

No. Your financial data is completely private. This tool relies on 100% Client-Side JavaScript. Your hourly rates and work schedules are processed in your browser's temporary memory and instantly disappear the moment you close the tab.

How do I type AM/PM?

The time input fields rely on your device's native operating system. If your phone or computer is set to a 12-hour clock, you will see an AM/PM toggle. If your device is set to military time (24-hour clock), you will just enter the numbers (e.g., 17:00 for 5 PM). The calculator's math will work perfectly either way.
